Product Content
Digital Printing Systems has taken a number of measures to work toward the goal of being sensitive to the environmental impact of our business. Our control points fall into two broad categories; what material and items we use and how we use them.
Regarding what we use, the largest item is paper. We primarily use two types of paper, uncoated stock and paper that has been coated so as to work in ticket dispensers that have thermal printers in them. Approximately 70% of the paper we use is uncoated, except for unusual circumstances, we sole source this paper. 100% of the paper we use is certified through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). What this means is that all of the paper we buy is certified ISO 4001 compliant, and rigorous standards are upheld to insure not only minimal environmental impact but also the promotion of healthy growing and sustainable forests.
It is a reasonable assumption that over 90% of the paper we use is compliant with environmental forest certification and chain-of-custody standards.
The second significant item we use is Ink. Over 10 years ago we converted from solvent to water based inks for all of our flexographic presses. This almost eliminated our emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). We also have offset presses where we use inks with the lowest VOC's available. We track VOC usage daily and we remain under the very stringent threshold set by the Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), which has the toughest standards in the United States.
Packaging
The corrugated packaging materials used are produced with 50% recycled material and material including fast growing pine trees grown specifically for these purposes. As soon as the mature trees are harvested, they are replaced with seedlings. The boxes are made using natural and biodegradable products such as corn starch glue, natural paraffin waxes and vegetable oils as protective coatings. Printing on the boxes use inks made from soybean oil. In the future, the boxes will be fabricated of 100% recycled material rather than trees. The packaging materials used can be recycled at the end of its useful life.
Shipping
Digital Printing Systems' primary shippers have joined the SmartWaySM Transport Partnership, an innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gasses and air pollution.
We are constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of our product while being mindful of the environment and the impact we have upon it.
